How did you find Cricut and why did you join the Contributing Artist Program?
I originally found Cricut through Etsy. I had no idea what a “Cricut” was until I saw people making things and tagging Cricut in their handmade products. I started selling my designs on Etsy and Cricut initially reached out to me to join the program. I’m over-the-moon excited to be a Contributing Artist!
I’ve always loved art growing up. I am entirely self-taught and never went to school for it, and never graduated college. In fact, I went to college for photography, not graphic design. That is what I did professionally for 7 years before I found my love and passion for digital art. When the pandemic hit, my photography business went under, and I desperately needed to find something else. I was out living in LA at the time, and I was flat broke. While frantically doing internet searches, I somehow stumbled upon the Cricut world and designing SVG files. This is how I found my passion for graphic design. I learned entirely through YouTube tutorials and opened an Etsy shop. I knew in my heart this was meant for me.
My earliest memory of drawing is actually captured on an old VHS tape from when I was 1 year old. I still have this video. I was sitting in a highchair, holding a big pen and drawing on a take-out menu from a restaurant. One of the very first sentences I ever said was “I can draw”. The video gives me heart-warming chills because it was almost foretelling.
What (or who) inspires you and why?
My father. He always inspired me to chase my dreams and work hard for what I wanted in life. He was an entrepreneur and worked as a DJ for multiple radio stations across the US for over 50 years. He loved making others happy and creating content to speak to the soul of his audience. He passed away last year from cancer. I take pride in knowing I am carrying on his legacy of dream-chasing and creating art that people cherish and enjoy.
What’s your favorite craft (or art project) that you’ve ever created?
A favorite art project of mine would have to be my paintings. When I am not digitally drawing, I am either painting on canvas with acrylics, or watercolor painting in my journal. I once painted a portrait of my friend’s pet rabbit to hang on the wall above her cage. It’s definitely my favorite so far.
Describe your art in one word.
Relatable. I always create art for Design Space with the thought in mind of who it might be for. Why they are cutting it, what project they are making, and how it speaks to them personally. I love creating files that make people feel something, whether it be motivation, self-appreciation, humor, or heartfelt emotion.
What motivates you to work hard?
The truth is, working hard at something you love never feels like work at all. One of my favorite quotes is by Theodore Roosevelt, “The best prize that life can offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Motivation purely comes from just loving what you do. But one thing I could say that motivates me are my customers. Seeing how my art has impacted their daily lives and creativity lights a fire within me I never knew I could have. Seeing people all over the world create their own masterpieces with a little help from me is something so inspiring. I am beyond humbled and grateful to have the opportunity to do so. Motivation never runs out!
What does creativity mean to you?
Creativity is EVERYTHING to me. As children, our minds are so dense with creativity and wonder. As we get older, we are taught to forget this and climb the 9-5 corporate ladder, leaving a dull and colorless world behind. I don’t think many realize how powerful their talents are and how much creativity is cherished by other people. Being able to express yourself is not only important for mental-health, but should be apart of everyone’s daily lives, in my opinion. Creativity is the window to the soul, and shouldn’t be limited.
What is your favorite family recipe?
My mom’s homemade spaghetti. It takes her 6-8 hours just to cook the sauce. I come from an Italian family, so this recipe always hits.
Do you collect anything?
I do! Some people might think it’s silly, but I recently started collecting NFTs. It’s still pretty new technology, but I really enjoy the art aspect of it. Our world is becoming more digital everyday, so I love staying on top of new trends.
Favorite Cricut product and why?
The Cricut Cutie. Why? Because they are so cute of course! The cutie is the mascot for my office and sits above my desk and watches me work.
